When shopping for Jeep hitches there are two main things that you should put into consideration, Jeep hitch classes and Jeep Hitch Sizes. Not all Jeep hitches are the same some will need customization of your Jeep bumper and some might be ideal for different types of Jeep models such as Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade, Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Liberty and Jeep Commander.

The size of the Jeep hitch refers to the inside dimensions of your Jeep receiver hitch and they come in four standard sizes 1-1/4″, 2″, 2-1/2″, and 3, while the Jeep hitch class ratings are classified depending on the towing capacity and receiver tube sizes and are divided into five classes.

The Best Jeep Cherokee Hitch

You can install a front a rear Jeep Cherokee Hitch on your Jeep Cherokee, we have the Reese 65009 installed in the front of our Jeep XJ, and the CURT 13395 Class three hitch on our Jeep Cherokee KL.

Best Front Jeep Cherokee XJ Hitch.

For the Jeep Cherokee XJ, you can install a front 2-inch receiver and a rear Jeep hitch receiver, we will start with the front receiver, there are three brands and receivers that are compatible with the Jeep Cherokee XJ for the front bumper they include, the Reese, Draw-Tite part numbers 65009 and Curt part number 31084, we will focus on Reese part number 65009 because that’s what we have first-hand experience and installed on our Jeep Cherokee XJ, and it would be best if we recommend products we are using on our Jeep.

We recommend the Reese 65009 front mount 2” receiver for an Overlanding and off-roading Jeep Cherokee XJ, we use the Reese front receiver as our Jeep recovery kit and overlanding accessories that we use to attach lots of Jeep recovery tools and overlanding attachments, and most important we use to park our trailer when overlanding in state parks.

The Reese can handle up to 9000lbs of line pull and a 300 lbs vertical load capacity for your offroad recovery and overlanding needs, it’s durable thanks to its E-coat electrostatic coating that prevents your receiver from corrosion when in contact with outdoor elements.

Some of the accessories you will need for your Jeep Hitch Include:

Jeep Trailer Ball Mount.

Jeep Trailer Ball Mount: If you have lifted your Jeep for ground clearance purposes by either using bigger Jeep tires or a lift kit to increase its ground clearance and you are still using your factory hitch with a 2” drop, you might need a trailer ball mount that will work with the clearance you have to attach the hitch receiver and provide the connection between your hitch-mounted accessories and your Jeep for towing or hauling.

For example, after installing our Jeep hitch on our Jeep Wrangler we noticed that our Jeep spare tire carrier was too close to the Jeep hitch and we bought an adjustable trailer hitch with 2.5 to 8 inches drop or rise to give a clearance between the Jeep hitch and the spare tire carrier.

You might also require a Jeep hitch extender if you are having problems with your Jeep hitch tongue jack handles clearance for hitching and unhitching your travel trailer, or leveling your Jeep trailer from front to back, we use TOPTOW Hitch extenders for our 2 inches Jeep receivers to get up to 7 inches of extension length.

Note: Before purchasing Jeep hitch extenders, droppers, or raisers, it’s important to research tongue weights and level effects of your Jeep towing set-up, failing to do so can lead to unsafe towing conditions by extending, lowering, or raising your Jeep hitch set-up which can lead to unsafe towing conditions, compromised Jeep handling, and increased risk of accidents.

If you don’t want to use a Jeep hitch extender, raiser, or dropper, you can opt for alternative Jeep tire carriers that will provide a clearance between your hitch and your spare tire such as the TeraFlex JL/JLU Alpha HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit.

Alternatively, you can use a different type of Jeep hitch mount that will work with the clearance you have, one of the alternatives that we recommend is the GEN-Y Glyder Torsion-Flex Ball Mount for 2-inch receivers with Torsion Flex technology that allows your Jeep and trailer to glide up and down eliminating the jarring and shock transfer of standard 2” ball mounts.

In most Jeep cases with a class III hitch which is rated for 5,000 pounds, you will want a safety chain rated as high as the Jeep hitch capacity such as the CURT 48-inch Trailer Safety Chain with 7/16-In S-Hooks, 5,000 lbs. Break Strength.

Jeep Hitch Installation Tools and Materials.

To install your Jeep hitch, here are some tools that you will require to ensure a proper and secure Jeep hitch installation, they are all focused on ensuring an easy, safe, and secure installation.

Tools Required to Install Jeep Hitches.

The materials required during Jeep hitch installation are relatively simple tools that you might buy or find lying around in your garage, you can rent or buy these tools in your local auto parts store, or online platforms, we have also included links to products that we use on the content below if you need to buy them, don’t sweat:

• Thread Tap and Thread locker: The thread tap is used to create or clean threads in the bolt holes, It ensures that the bolts can be securely fastened into the hitch mounting points, to secure the bolts in place we also use Locktite thread locker that makes sure your Jeep hitch bolts don’t loosen up due to vibrations when hauling or towing on rough roads as we always do when off-roading and overlanding.
• Wire Brush & Metal Prep: You will also need some wire brush to clean Jeep frame rust and bumper rust from the mounting points of your Jeep hitch, you can also use the wire brush to remove dirt and debris accumulated over the years off-roading. if you spot rust in your mounting points during installation, we recommend using a wire brush or a grinder to clean the contact surfaces and apply Rust-Oleum spray paint before installation to prevent rust from reoccurring.
• Torque Wrench: Most factory Jeep’s hitch & rear tow hook bolts will require 81N.m 60ft. Lbs. of torque to tighten and fasten your Jeep hitch, you will need a precision torque wrench that will allow you to apply the required torque without over-tightening which is crucial for the safety and integrity of your Jeep hitch. We highly recommend reading the installation manual for aftermarket Jeep hitches and rear tow hook bolts for specific torque specifications recommended by the manufacturer.
• Hitch Wrench: Depending on the size of your hitch balls, you will need a hitch wrench to install the hitch ball we use the Reese Towpower hitch ball wrench to remove and install our Jeep hitch balls, for DIY enthusiasts who would like an alternative we have also successfully used big pipe wrench, breaker bars or tow bar with appropriate sockets, or 30mm gun barrels to get up to 250 ft-lbs. of required Jeep hitch ball torque even with rusted or Lactitie-applied Jeep hitch ball threads.
• Work Gloves: You will also need work gloves to protect your hands when installing your Jeep Hitches, we use Mechanix wear gloves to protect against cuts, and abrasion, and prevent contact with rust-oleum spray pains, Loctite, or sharp edges during the Jeep hitch installation.
• Safety Glasses: You will also need safety glasses to protect your eyes from dirt, debris, spray paint, oils, and other hazards that might occur when working on the undercarriage of your Jeep during the Jeep hitch installation.
• C-Clamp: we also find a hitch clamp necessary to hold the hitch accessories in place during the installation processes, the C-Clamp removes the “play” between the accessories and also helps in positioning components to provide stability during the installation processes.
• Creeper: You will also need a wheeled creeper that will help you slide under your Jeep to reach your Jeep frame hitch mounting points, a wheeled creeper will provide easy access to your Jeep frame crossmember.
• Wheel Chocks: To secure your Jeep to protect it from rolling or movements when applying pressure when torquing your Jeep, you will need to place wheel chocks to prevent movements and rolling of the Jeep due to the force when installing the Jeep hitch components.
• Rotary Tool: We highly recommend having a rotary tool at hand when installing a Jeep hitch, and its accessories, the rotary tool will come in handy in case you need to remove rust or burrs from your Jeep frame cross member or bumper and trim metal parts and components modifications during installation of the Jeep hitch.

Materials Required for Jeep Hitch Installation.

After making sure you have the tools required for a Jeep hitch installation you will require some materials for Jeep hitch installation to ensure a secure and proper setup. Below are some of the materials and their specific use case in the Jeep hitch installation process:

• Penetrating Oil: Depending on the Jeep hitch you choose; you might need to remove your bumper to access your Jeep frame cross member, you might experience problems getting one of the four bolts started due to rust or stuck bolts, for this reason, we recommend having penetrating oil handy to loosen and lubricate the rust or stuck bolts, you will also need penetrating oil to lubricate the bolts and placement holes to make assembly and future disassembly easier and prevent damage to your Jeep hitch components.
• Jeep Class III Receiver Hitch: You will also need a receiver hitch which is the main component of your Jeep hitch installation, and this will attach to your Jeep frame to allow you to mount various hitch accessories such as the Jeep ball mount and drawbar that help tow Jeep hitch rack, boats, trailers, etc.
• Jeep Ball Mount: You will also need a ball mount that will be attached to your Jeep receiver hitch and your Jeep hitch ball, there are lots of ball mounts options that’s why we recommend making sure you purchase a Jeep ball mount designed for your specific towing equipment’s, and Jeep ball size, you can choose an extender, drop or rise ball mounts depending on your Jeep hitch clearance needs as shown in the illustrative image below to ensure your Jeep trailer or any other towed pieces of equipment is level when pulling in your Jeep.

• Jeep Hitch Ball: You will also need a hitch ball that you will attach to the hitch ball mount, it provides the connection point between your hitch and the trailer or towed equipment, you will need a hitch ball size that will match your towed equipment coupler.
• Drawbar Pin: You should also make sure you have a drawbar pin that will hold the Jeep ball mount to the hitch receiver to prevent it from coming out when towing with your Jeep.
• Retainer Clip: To secure the drawbar pin, you will also need a retainer clip that secures the drawbar pin, the retainer pin helps prevent the drawbar pin from sliding accidentally due to the vibration caused by the vehicle and the towing equipment when on transit, especially on rough roads, this is a highly recommended accessory.
• Jeep Hitch Clamp: Talking of vibration, you can also add a hitch clamp that removes the play during transit between your hitch-mounted carrier and the hitch receiver.

How to put a hitch on a Jeep.

After purchasing your ideal Jeep hitch, and accessories and making sure all the materials and tools for installation are available, you will need to install your Jeep hitch and accessories such as the wiring harness in case your Jeep doesn’t include one (we have instances where the harness is missing and you have to purchase an aftermarket harness).

Jeep Hitch Installation Cost

For Jeepers who opt for a mechanic installation, A Jeep hitch will cost you anything from $100 to $200 for class I & II Jeep hitch, for class II to IV the cost goes up from $200 to $500, the cost goes up for more complicated Jeep hitch installations from class IV to V.

DIY Jeep Hitch Installation.

For DIY enthusiasts a Jeep installation is an easier DIY task, however, we recommend at least having someone to help you, we find it easy to handle the Jeep installation as a two-man project that will take 30 minutes to a few hours depending on any technical issues that you might face when installing your Jeep Hitch receiver. Plus, our step-by-step guide got you!

Prepare Your Jeep.

The first step is to prepare your Jeep for the installation of the Jeep receiver hitch, you will need to park your Jeep on a flat surface, activate your parking lights, and choke your Jeep wheels to avoid your Jeep from rolling due to pressure application when tightening your Jeep hitch bolts.

For Jeep Wrangler owners with a Jeep spare tire, you might need to remove the spare tire carrier and the tire, for other Jeepers with Jeep Gladiators, and Jeep Cherokees including Jeep Wrangler owners you might also need to remove your Jeep bumper.

If you intend to use a Creeper to access your Jeep frame cross members you might need to jack up your Jeep to give you more room to work with especially when your Jeep frame needs some work such as rust, dirt removal, or tough nuts.

Afterward, you will need to remove the plastic plugs from your Jeep frame where the hitch plug-and-play T harness and hitch will be installed, or bolts where the Jeep hitch will be bolted if you encounter a tough bolt, you can use some penetrating oil and use some wire brush to remove rust and dirt from the bolt and make it easier to remove the bolts.

In case you have misaligned bolt holes, you will need to drill some holes for the bolts in your Jeep frame especially when using custom and aftermarket Jeep hitch receivers, we recommend drilling holes according to instructions provided by the hitch manufacturer.

After removing the plugs and bolts or drilling your hitch bolt holes you will need to clean the surface clean using a rust-oleum to prevent rust from affecting your Jeep frame.

Attach Your Jeep Hitch Receiver.

Once you have prepared the hitch mount holes in your Jeep frame it is time to attach your Jeep hitch, you will need a c-clamp to help you position and hold the Jeep hitch in place when installing it, or you can just ask a friend to help you position and align the hitch receiver as you tighten the hitch bolts to the frame of the Jeep.

You will need to use Locktite on the bolts and nuts to prevent them from loosening due to vibrations, Locktite will set in just 10 minutes but you have to wait until 24 hours for it to fully cure before towing, you can take this opportunity to make sure you don’t leave any exposed frames that can be contaminated with rust on your Jeep frame, you can apply rest-oleum or paint over the exposed parts, as rust spread very fast in Jeep frames.

You will have to install your other accessories such as a Jeep hitch wiring harness, Jeep ball mount, weight distribution hitch, and Jeep hitch ball. If you intend to tow a Jeep trailer, you will legally be required to install electrical wiring for your Jeep trailer tail lights for safety purposes, depending on the size of your Jeep trailer or caravan, you can also install your trailer brake controller at this point.
